DIVIDED WE CANNOT STAND
It is not possible to be able to right our wrongs if we allow divisions and disunity to continue to thrive among us. There is power in unity. This, our counterparts discovered long time ago. They did not just discover this. It was worked out and proven to be workable. It is responsible for most of the lofty heights they have been able to attain because without unity, two people cannot be able to work together. This, the Scripture agrees with! (Amos3:3). It is to our shame that we know the power of unity but have refused and or failed to pay its price thereof. What else would be the right phrase or term to use in describing our attitude, towards our various lands while we already know that all we need is to have a common voice?
Isn’t it interesting to note that for decades, my beautiful continent endowed with uncountable number of mineral deposits beneath the earth, were busy organizing unity while the Europeans had themselves unified from the beginning? Does that name Organization of African Unity and the Europeans whose own, simply read: European Union, not have different connotations? We have the natural resources but lack the human resources just because of disunity. In other words, though we are blessed to have great men and women who have shook the world with their intellects, but we have refused to make use of their wealth of knowledge because we are not united. Does where one come from make any difference as long as that person can deliver?
I do not think so but my people have ignorantly rejected our God sent messiahs because of lack of unity! In the part of the world I come from, any good which is of low quality is said to be Taiwanese! It will amaze you how my people patronize the same goods said to be of low quality. The most reason for the acceptance is because it is foreign. It is shocking to see how we because of disunity, prefer to promote low quality and endanger ourselves. In the same country, there is a city which produces goods whose qualities are far better than that of Taiwan but my people will never patronize goods. There is no other reason for such attitude but disunity, tribalism and other ugly vices.
It is to our shame that we have so much allowed disunity to thrive such, that those goods of low standard are imported and sold instead of encouraging our own people. We prefer to patronize foreigners while discouraging our own people. Nevertheless, we turn around and look for one demon or devil which might be responsible for our backwardness. Every product goes through stages. If at the first stage one is encouraged and supported, such will move to the next level. If discouraged, another great dream would have been aborted while lives are shattered as unemployment heightens. We have refused to accept our own people and thus give them the necessary support needed, to land them where they will get to and bring accolades home. These are products of disunity.
It hurts to see that daily we mature further in this ugly trade and even tend to be proud of it. Unity promotes whomsoever the cap fits! Sure, there would be oppositions but in a situation where a few people, succeed in winning over the majority, eye brows ought to be raised and questions asked. None of these has however happened because we chose to live in disunity forgetting entirely that divided, we cannot stand. It is only if and when we unite that we can
be able to raise our voice. Take note of the fact that when voices are individually raised, no one hears them but when united the world will hear, and take us serious. Unity as I was trying to say earlier cannot be organized but, desired with every hand on deck. Though my people have woken up since the inception of the African Union a few years back, but the seed earlier sown by our fathers in their ignorance, is still thriving to our hurt. A journey to the Diaspora will make a better understanding of what I mean to address. Do you know that because we were told by our fathers that this tribe and the other tribe have nothing in common, the various exposures we’ve had, haven’t changed such mindsets? How sad! Can you imagine what harm is been done to our beautiful continent if each and everyone, of the various tribes continue to keep to themselves? It will simply be the case of where two elephants fight, the grasses suffer. This has hampered our progress and have continually brought us set backs!
In the Diaspora, the average Whiteman, simply see every Blackman as an African. Am sure they would be shocked to realize, that the people who they think are one, do not even see themselves as such. This attitude of not being unified, has given rise to varying degrees of evil vices amongst, and against; ourselves! We are, ready to give ourselves away at any given sum. What a pity! Is it not a shame that because everyone is busy pursuing personal gains, that even in this beautiful twenty first century, there are still forms of slave trade going on! We tend, to be selling ourselves out once more to the Whites who are capitalizing on our weaknesses. This is even at a price cheaper than what our fore fathers sold their strong men out.
What else would one expect while we have chosen to entirely forget the power of unity! Anything goes while we, gradually loose our place in the world politic and vice versa. Anyone can wake up and deal with my people anyhow it pleases them. Why won’t it be so when they already know that we are not one and are not even ready to fight for the cause of our people? It has become like the tale of the man whosee brother was beaten by one who was purportedly stronger than him. Instead of defending his brother, or putting up a defence, he accused his own brother of being guilty while he was not. What a sad situation that has further fuelled our woes! Is it true that we have no power to defend our own against outsiders? The right answer will be no but we have continually answered yes because of the role disunity has persistently played. Should we go on this way? No my people!
